English prog rock band Yes bid a special farewell to their former bassist and founding
member Chris Squire at their first show since his death in June.
Squire had been receiving cancer treatment since the start of the year but eventually succumbed to leukemia on 27th June at the age of 67. Squire founded the band along with singer and guitarist Clive Bayley, drummer Bob Hagger and lead guitarist Peter Banks in 1967 and is the only man to have played in every incarnation of the band.
The band took a break from touring following Squire’s death and on Friday night returned to the stage in Mashantucket, Connecticut with bass player Billy Sherwood performing Squire’s parts. During the show, the lights were dimmed with a spotlight shining down on one of Squire’s Rickenbacker basses in the spot where Squire would traditionally stand when on stage. The band then dedicated their song ‘Onward’ to their fallen comrade with singer Jon Davison saying “We all celebrating the magic of music- but also the remembrance of a great friend. We love you Chris”.
Yes are currently on tour across North America with American AOR band Toto until 12th September. They return to Britain next year for another tour.
